Brushless motors in radio control are generally either an inline or outrunner design. Inline motors are more efficient but are normally low torque, high revving units. The outrunner design is slightly less efficient but dependant on KV produces considerably more torque, and can swing a larger propeller of equivalent or greater to that that of an inline design with gearbox. The performance advantage and lack of gearbox with the resultant weight saving has increased the outrunners popularity over inline designs, although inline motors have there own more specific applications in the hobby.

The KV ratings applied to brushless motors provides an indication to the operating character of the motor and actually refers to the revolutions the motor will produce per Volt applied. A high KV motor will offer high revolution per Volt applied and little torque allowing only a small propeller to be used in direct drive or require a gearbox of a suitable ratio to swing a larger propeller. Virtually all the inline motors fall into this category, but most high KV motors find applications in speed models, helicopters and EDF jets. Low KV motors however will allow the user to operate much larger propellers in direct drive and are mainly associated with outrunner designs. This is a very general categorisation and obviously there are exceptions.

Brushless motors offer the benefit of greater efficiency and less maintenance over older traditional can motors with no traditional brushes to wear. A common misconception is that brushless motors are completely maintenance free. This statement is partially true, but virtually all brushless motor designs rely on ball races (bearings) to support their shafts and these ball races will benefit greatly from a regular light oiling regardless of the brand or manufacturer.

To match your new brushless motor we also have an extremely good range of brushless speed controllers at an amazing price for the quality and features. Check out our brushless speed controller (ESC) section.
