Twisted Hobbys Crack Yak 55 32" EPP Gold

We have been teased for some time with a lovely lady having the vapours over the Crack Yak drawing emblazoned on the wall she’s resting on. The Crack Yaks designer Chris Jewett has been in on this game with the reflection of a prototype in his sun glasses. The carrot was dangled for ages but boy, the result was worth it. As you can see, this must be one of the meanest but at the same time coolest Yak’s you have ever seen. Available in gold or blue either scheme pops with vibrancy and each design is printed on both surfaces. We don’t normally mention the look of a profile EPP model as it can be a subjective discussion, but this one is different. We like it a lot!

Chris who is responsible for designing the Crack Yak is an extremely well known display pilot in the USA. Not only is he a member of Team Twisted but he also displays his immense skills with Extreme Flights Team Extreme. Thanks to Chris’s knowledge, skills and dogged perseverance the Crack Yak has become a reality. Thanks to our close association with Twisted Hobbys we were aware of the amount of development that was going into this design, but now we have the kits in our hands the high levels of attention to detail is so clearly visible. We must congratulate RC Factory who manufacturers the kit for Twisted for making this model so special.

Understandably, most flyers will want to know what makes this design different from the other Twisted designs from RCF. For starters the Crack Yak has a slightly high wing loading with a faster roll rate. The faster roll rate is comparable to an indoor depron foamy so crazy manoeuvres are possible. A noticeable design feature is the notched leading edge. The notch provides a clean stall break on elevator type manoeuvres. The notch also to give less wing area at the tips so that it will snap, turn roll better, and thanks to the aerodynamic effect stall in a fairly straight line. The straight stall results in easier harrier manoeuvres. The tail surfaces have been designed to allow for effortless tumbling moves. The elevator can provide a sharp attitude change and the rudder unbelievably tight knife edge manoeuvres. The Crack Yak incorporates an enhanced stiffness to allow slightly greater precision. Although a small design it has the feeling of a larger balsa model but can be flown virtually anywhere and in any space or wind condition. The Twisted Crack Yak 55 is probably the best 32” model currently available and will provide hours of fun in a compact airframe.

The Optional Undercarriage.
All the production photos show the optional undercarriage fitted. This is NOT included in the kit and must be purchased separately. Unlike the other Twisted/RCF designs the Crack Yak provides the undercarriage mounting point so no guess work is required. Although the undercarriage adds to the cool appeal of the Yak on a small model such as this it can affect the flying performance. Chris Jewett has recently commented publically on the subject of the undercarriage and advises that it slows down the roll rate and adds extra weight. The reduction in the roll rate he considers a negative but considers the increase in weight provides slightly better penetration which is good. It will really be a matter of preference but the Crack Yak was designed from the outset without an undercarriage so don’t think you’re missing out if your decide against it.

Down to the details.
Twisted believes that their EPP designs should be sensibly priced and huge fun. They also believe that they should also be seriously considered instead of a flight simulator for improving your flying skills. We agree. The major benefit of an EPP model is its durability and as such will normally be purchased by the flyer who wants to progress their flying skills or the pro who just wants a capable but fun airframe. A relaxed pilot progresses faster and equipped as intended with moderately priced components the prospect of hard arrivals becomes less of a concern as the material costs are low.

Equipment
The Crack Yak 55 has the simplest of requirements and can be equipped as recommended by Twisted at little expense. Installation in the Crack Yak has been made as simple as possible with pre-cut servo holes, pre bevelled and hinged surfaces and tabbed construction that just slots together. It would be virtually impossible to assemble this incorrectly. The pre-cut servo cut-outs are perfect for TowerPro servos around which the model was designed. The Crack Yak requires a Towerpro SG91R for ailerons and two SG51R for the rudder and elevator. The cut-outs are so specific that each servo type fits perfectly in its prescribed slot – no trimming or adjustments required. To power the model the Crack Yak was designed and developed around the Xseries motor and 10Amp esc. This is a lightweight power house and has proven to be a tough performer ideal for this potential harsh environment. We offer this motor and matching speed controller in a total power package that also includes the required servos. This is the same package as Twisted offers for this design. Low cost components needn’t mean poor performance. Twisted and ParkAero generally offer the same components for the models we offer. This has ensured that the components we offer work extremely well and have been tested relentlessly.

Adhesives
The Crack Yak can be assembled entirely with medium cyano and kicker. However some customers prefer to use contact adhesives such as UHU Por or Welders. Both adhesives will work well with this airframe.

What a pleasant surprise this is, a very good performer indoors, but a fantastic performer outdoors, very precise, change of direction is instant, a very powerful rudder which barely needs to be used in knife edge - just brilliant! I used the ParkAero power set (1800 Kv motor), servo set and GensAce lipos and in my opinion these are the perfect choice for the model. Without doubt, one of my favourite foamies to date.
